That's a nice close up shot! Very clean and clear.I have just about given up on my 70-300mm lens. It just doesn't perform as well as the 18-250 which is surprising since it's a Nikon lens.

This is about a 50% crop of a shot I took with my 70-300 at maximum zoom as close as I could get and still be in focus. Who ever heard of a 300mm macro lens? In this case it worked out fairly good.
