No other sound quite like the confidant roar of the DeHavalland Beaver's 450 hp. 9 cylinder Pratt & Whitney  radial engine at full throttle during take off!
Took this picture a couple of days ago on my way back to Coal Harbour with the landing craft.

Swimming the Reefs in Maui

Shameless beggars

Funny how this works... We go to the beach with the dogs , turn them loose and before you know it they are gone, miles down the beach or up in the woods or out in the water swimming after ducks... But soon as the lunch kit comes out... Can't get rid of them for nothing!

Cosmic Smoke

I went out in hopes of capturing a meteor from the Persied meteor shower this weekend again. But again no luck. I did take another photo of the old cabin from a different perspective. I was able to get more of the Milky Way in the photo by using the Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens. I did end up with a few star trail pictures from setting the camera up to continuously take photos.

 I this star trail picture the stars look to be going in different directions due to my latitude, the angle of view of the northern star and how the earth rotates in the celestial sphere. Different latitudes will give you different patterns for the stars. The camera was pointed to the south west.

I was able to capture a few star trail reflections in the pond in the photo. The northern star is in top left of this image making for a circular pattern of the stars. The camera was pointed off center to the north east.

Extreme crop with the Nikon D800

 

I had an extra 20 minutes this weekend so I stepped out in my front yard and tried to get a few photos of the humming birds that were buzzing around. I managed to get three shots before I had to get back to work.

I cropped these shots about 95% just to get the hummingbird in the photo by itself.

This is one of the original photos just to give you an idea of how much cropping was done.

 

These were shot with a Nikon D800 and Nikon 28-300mm lens from about 15-20 feet away. The lens was at 300mm and the camera was set at F6.3, ISO 1600 and the shutter speed was 1/3200.

 

I was trying to freeze the wings but even at 1/3200 of a second I couldn't do it.

Really!!!

Just want to let you know between the lazy photographer vs. the serious one.  Well, the lazy one is me on the first picture!

Pacific Swift and Pacific Grace

The Pacific Swift and the Pacific Grace have both been tied up at Port Hard for the last several days. I posted another picture of them in an earlier post. The Other side of the Tracks

 This is a Parker through truss bridge that BNSF uses.

 Sometimes you have to wait for a train to go by until you can get to the other side of the tracks.

This is the view from the other side. The bridge was lit by a small light on the control station for the train crossing.

Calamari on the hoof, so to speak

 

Unlike in Paul's neck of the woods it's been raining here almost everyday this week so taking photos has been difficult. So now you get to see a few more shots from our last trip to Maui.

 

These were taken near Black Rock on Ka'anapali Beach. I have to say, squid are fast little suckers!

Around the docks.

A couple of recent pictures from Hardy Bay. The weather over here on the North end of Vancouver Island continues to be fabulous, we're onto day 43 without a drop of rain which is unheard of and no rain in the forecast for at least another week. Even the old timers up here can't remember a dry stretch going on for quite this long.

While out hiking around the other day my wife and I met a young couple with their brand new 8 week old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. What a good looking young fellow, couldn't help myself, had to take some pictures!

End of the road.

Went for a hike with the dogs up some very old overgrown logging roads and found or I should say re-found this old bus. 25 years ago I'd seen it in this same place but you could almost drive to it back then. Now days it's about a 2 1/2 mile hike from the nearest road to get there. 

I'm thinking it was someone's "Hippy Shack" back in the day judging by some of the junk scattered around. The only one living there now is Webster the Spider.

Perseid and the Milky Way

 With the Perseid Meteor shower starting up this last week, I thought I would give getting a meteor photo. I was able to capture this one flying over head towards the milky way and another faint one just above the horizon.

 I did capture another faint one in the center right of this photo. Hopefully next weekend with the meteor show hitting its peak period I will be able to capture brighter ones.

I set the camera up on time lapse to try and capture the meteors, this is the resulting image after I stacked them in StarStax program. This is 100 images over roughly a hour and a half of shooting.

It's been a tough couple of weeks for taking photos. I actually had a little time this weekend but it rained all weekend so I couldn't get out and do anything.

 

Hopefully this week I will get a few new photos to post. If I don't it will be back to the Hawaii files!

Safe surfing II

Another tacky tourist picture from Waikiki... Ha ha!

Hidden away in the seldom visited upstairs portion of the International Market Place is this wall of water and a surfboard that just invites the more adventurous tourist to climb aboard and get their picture taken. Naturally I fell for it!
