How better a way to advertise a business in the middle of the retro Plaza District than with neon!
Stylish, eye catching colors, with a smooth curving arrow to show the way, all sitting atop stacked rock with portholes. The sign itself is a Work of Art!
I have seen night pictures with the sign lit and it is most impressive in the glow of neon color. A return trip must be made to capture. Besides, I want to stand under the sign to hear the buzz and steady hum with the occasional sizzling and frying sounds. Look at the glow on my skin while feeling tiny hairs stand on my arms. A hot Oklahoma night in summer with high humidity and no wind brings the full effect! I had one fellow tell me that he could smell ozone burning? I've yet to experience that sense!
PhotoArt Studios
The reinvented 3,000sq.ft. space contains two studios, dressing areas and a complete kitchen. Advertised as a fun&fluid space, combining art&function to blend with the edgy, unique character of the District, it works at bringing world class photography to OKC!
Owners were out at the time I visited, but I cupped my hands around my eyes and took a peek thru the doors and windows. Black and White square floor tiles polished to a high shine, chrome accented furniture, a sparkling stainless steel kitchen and framed and matted photo art from small to poster size neatly hung in the office and waiting area was seen. I can only imagine how nice the studio areas must be! These young entrepreneurs, by all accounts I heard, are enjoying success with this venture and doing well. This does not surprise me. A Dream topped with Neon, always comes true!

You don't find many of these around anymore! Good find Parker, and nice shot.

DeleteNeon signs are revered and celebrated in towns located along the Mother Road of Route 66. Driving the old concrete narrow ribbon of a road from Chicago to L.A., I suspect one will find more examples of this wonderful art form than anywhere. I do believe you have given me an inspiration for a new series. I was born and still reside alongside the Mother Road.
Clean your signs and make sure they are working Merchants of Yukon; You might just show up on Shutterbugs, and our Town will be first in the series!
Nice commentary with the photos Parker! The sign reminds me of an old diner or maybe even an old drive-in movie theater sign.
ReplyDeleteDiners and Drive-In Movies???
DeleteThanks for the inspiration! I have had an idea of a shoot in El Reno, (my birth-place), and the old drive-in movie west of town on Route 66 was going to be a feature. An Oklahoma muralist artist chose the backside for his canvas to celebrate our heritage in a large way!
love the retro-style sign. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, do go back to see the interior. The colors are just right for the fact that photos are art!
ReplyDeleteYes Kate I will. My curiosity is aroused also!
DeleteNo doubt in my mind that Photography is Art! We have total control of content, expression, distance, B&W or color, and since the advent of digital the ability to manipulate a scene as we wish to convey. And as all prior Art Forms that came before,'How do we define our new found freedom of personal expression from altered to real!' Photographers are embarking on a new frontier in picture taking with endless possibilites to showcase their skills via computer! I don't know, and do not really care for pigeon holing artists of photos! But just wondering if in the future we will be labled on the Art Scene, and how so?
A question for all Photographers!
Photos can definitley be art! And with some of the other "art" I have seen I would say photos can be art more than other things.
DeleteGreat looking sign.
ReplyDeleteSo reminiscent of the "Post war boom" era, living the American Dream and Route 66! Nice find Parker!
