Stars on the water

This is from another early morning trip to the windward side of the island. I actually took this photo on the beach in front of Mama's Fish House near Pai'a. 

If you ever find yourself in the area Mama"s is a great place to eat. Fresh fish caught and served the same day. It ain't cheap but then again, just about nothing on Maui is.

Whales

These are probably the best whale photos I got this trip. I think the whales are my nemesis. I just haven't gotten the shots I want and I may not be able to get them in once a year trip. I WILL keep trying though!

Island Traffic

It looked like a race to me but I know they were all just chasing the wind and waves.

Dogs Love Snow!

This is actually saltwater beach ice Sunny is playing in which needs quite a bit colder temperatures to form. We've just come out of an almost two week cold snap with overnight temperatures falling to -11° C. or +12° F. which is quite cold for Vancouver Island. I have to admit that even though it was cold and clear, all that Sun was certainly a welcome sight!

The not so bad whale photos

These are two different whales that were jumping side by side one afternoon. In the third photo you can just see the second whale starting to breach as the first whale is out of the water.

Try as I might, I just couldn't get them both breaching at the same time. My camera just wasn't fast enough and the whales were both out of the water at the same time between frames.

Twisted Tree!

While out for a walk the other day I found this small Alder tree growing up through a chain link fence. The tree looks healthy enough but sure looks twisted where it has grown around the fence!

Having a beer on the beach

There's nothing like sitting on the beach in the middle of the afternoon in the shade of a tiki hut and having a beer and listing to some live music.

The outrigger canoes look like a lot of fun, and a lot of work! I think I'll stick to sitting in the shade with my cold beer.

Something Warm

It's cold, cloudy and snowing here today so I thought I would put something warm and bright on the blog.

Serenity

This is one of the many waterfalls along the road to Hana on Maui. The waterfalls are different every time we go just because of the differing amounts of rainfall from day to day.

Mid-Week Snow

We have been dusted with two snows this week. These pics are from the first one. Wonder how many more will come along this winter? Moisture in White can be Nice!

One more Banyan Tree

I took photos of the banyan tree from several different angles while I was there. I didn't think I would be getting up early enough again to come back. Little did I know I had several days I could have photographed the tree early in the morning.

I think this is my favorite view of the tree.

More Bad Whale Photos

I knew when I took these they wouldn't be good photos. It was late in the day and I was shooting into the sun and the whale was waaaay out there but this whale had been taunting me for 30 minutes, jumping and waving like he knew I was there, so I took some shots. The only reason I kept them is because the whale did a 180 degree spin while jumping.

I think next time I just need to rent a paddle board and go sit in the middle of the ocean all day with my camera.

Wolf Attack!

Sunny just lives for this kind of fun. Buster feigns indifference but it's just a big act.

A White Sandy Beach

That's what I wanted to see this morning however, I woke up to a foot of blindingly white snow and a temperature of 3 degrees with wind chills of 20 below. It's supposed to be -10 tonight without the wind chills. 

I should have stayed in Hawaii!

I did get out while it was snowing and attempt to take some more snowflake photos. I'm still learning but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. After about and hour and a half in the freezing weather I ended up with four shots that were decent. Focusing on such a tiny object is very hard to do!

What is it?

Three guesses what this might be. Tomorrow I'll post the answer.

The Sunset Wizard at work

I know how much Tex just loves Hawaiian sunsets so I thought I would give her two! LOL

These shots were taken about two minutes apart with the sun setting behind Lana'i. Both are HDR images.

Valleys of coral

I talked with a couple of underwater photographers on Maui and they gave me a couple of new places to take photos. We had a few days of really clear water so I ended up with some pretty decent photos.

 

I was surprised at both of these locations. You can drive to them both, park for free and walk right out into the water. There were several of the snorkel and scuba boats that would take you to the exact same spots but charge you $75-$90 each. A little research and talking to the right people will save you lots of money.
