Woolly Bear Caterpillar

Found a Woolly Bear Caterpillar this morning. According to folklore one can predict the coming winter by measuring how long the center section with the lighter colored fur is (or dots in the case of this specimen). The longer the center section, the milder the winter.

  2. We have a caterpillar down this way that they say that about except they say the longer the center section the colder the winter. Now I have to go look for a caterpillar!

That's another great close up shot.. Lots of detail in the leaf and caterpillar. Is that with the 18-300mm lens?

    1. I could have my folklore backwards, wouldn't be the first time. Ha ha!

Yes this is with the 18-300 at f16 I believe and cropped to about 1/4 of the original picture.

    1. Thanks Q. Yes handheld, I see that the shutter speed was 1/500th of a second for this shot.

My hand it would seem is much steadier than my cheapo plastic tripod. The only way to get my tripod to hold still is to use the remote or shoot with the timer.

  6. Nice macro Paul! The texture of this caterpillar really adds to the shot!
