"That's the biggest one I've ever seen"

I had just gotten out of the shower and walked out onto the lanai when a lady passing by looked up and said that exact phrase.

I smiled and thanked her for the compliment and went on with what I was doing.

Get your mind out of the gutter Tex, she was talking about my 600mm lens. At least I think she was. LOL

Most of the breaching whales were waaaaay out there this year. I tried some shots using the 600mm lens with a 2X teleconverter just to see what I could get. I got some photos but they weren't great. This whale was close to a half mile away and the image is cropped about 50%.

I've got some better whale shots but I thought I would tease you with the bad ones first!

  2. LOL!
Someway somehow your going to have to overcome that motion sickness and hitch a ride in a boat! Those whales seem to be teasing you no matter how big a lens you get. I'm wondering if the deeper water runs through a cut where they are running and surfacing?

    1. We've had them up close to the condo before (within 200 yards). I don't really think it's the depth that makes them go where they go. It may be more about the temperature of the water or the currents in the channel at the time. Of course I don't really know, I'm just making this up. They were always closer to us during the evenings than the mornings this trip. We were going to take a whale tour this trip but they just weren't jumping enough. In 2012 you couldn't go 15 minutes without seeing a whale and the last two years you've had to wait an hour or more to see them and even longer to catch them breaching. I'm ready to take a boat ride. As soon as they get more active I'm there, sea sickness or not!

  4. I guess that having the biggest one she has ever seen and a large sensor in the D800 makes these shots possible. Even cropping these images you still have a good size photo. Great shots by the way can't wait to see what else you got!
