A very strange cactus

I came across this strange cactus while out hiking a few days ago. I've never seen one like it and my buddy I was hiking with said he had only seen one other.

Great color and focus of a most unusual succulent.

I would like to have an ID on this cactus. Maybe your resident flora and fauna person.

Great find and great photos to go with! If I didn't already know it was a cactus of some sort I (being from the coast) might have mistaken it for sealife of some sort, especially the top photo.
