One Bad Hombre!

Cholulo Red

There I was walking back alone from a hike around the west side of Eagle Mountain. The morning had broke clear and cool and it was perfect for a long walk along a back country fire road in the mountains. Went as far as the Burma Road which is an east-west trail that follows the boundary fence between the Refuge and Ft.Sill. Photography, and getting in shape for when Ron and 'Q' arrive the 24th of this month was my goal! And all was going well until -----------------!!

After reaching the fence the return trip was started. Reaching the top of the last hill, about a half mile from my truck, is where I should have been 'Singing' or at least been whistling 'Dixie"!

Coming around the bend in the road going North was Parker! Coming around the bend going South was Red! A "Bad Wreck" was 'fixin' to happen! Spaces had been invaded! Parker snapped a quick pic, Red lowered his head and charged. Parker caught Red's horns with both hands and counted the freckles on it's nose before being tossed several feet backwards! As Parker landed Red was right on top of him ready for more! Parker slapped Ol Red with his straw hat while yelling at him and I guess Red had enough because he lumbered on up the hill never looking back! WHEW!!

Unfortunately Red's left horn caught my right forearm when we parted company, leaving a nasty gore wound. I applied direct pressure with paper towels I had and made the half mile to the truck. Washed the open wound with bottled water and applied a better dressing from a first aid kit from the truck. Drove to camp where once again the wound was washed with a sterile solution, anti-biotic ointment, and a proper bandage dressing was applied from my supplies. Now that the bleeding was manageable the 20 mile trip to Comanche Memorial Hospital in Lawton was made.

Lady Luck was still riding with me as I walked into the ER. The young lady at the desk signed me in and in less than 5 minutes was being evaluated. X-Rays showed no broken bones, tendons and ligaments OK, (I already knew that because I could see them working thru the wound), !

Wound was flushed with an Iodine based solution and it felt wonderful!!#@&*@!! Now my nice Lady Doctor deadened all the area and began a tedious job of sewing all the mess back together from the inside out. More stitches on the inside than out. She also informed me that I would have a nice scar on my arm to remember the moment. Sounds like a good deal to me!

I sure do not hold any bad feelings toward Red and hope he has none towards me. He lives there and I'm just a visitor. Beyond that Ol Red was just doing what any self respecting wild animal should do. Protect Yourself from Intruders!

I am mending quick and have almost full range of motion in my arm and wrist. Stitches come out the 11th, so should be back in Refuge the 22nd or 23rd of this month. Think I'll bring Cholulo Red a sack of sweet feed to help his attitude!

  1. Holy crap!! I'm glad you are all right, well, maybe you aren't alright but your alive! That sounds like it could have gone real bad real fast and we would be hiking the mountains looking for you.

At least you were prepared and level headed enough to make it back to your truck. I bet hooking up the rig and heading home was a chore, not to mention explaining everything to the wife.

You can leave the sack of feed at home if you want. If we run into red while I'm there there will be a very large pop and we will all be eating fresh steaks!

  2. oh my gosh, parker! i kept waiting for this to be a 'ha ha! had you going, didn't i?' tale! UGH! i am so glad it turned out as well as it did and they were able to get you stitched up and back in service! hopefully your camera survived, too (at least the memory card did or we wouldn't see this magnificent beast), but best of all, YOU did! holy crap is right!

  3. First of all glad you are still with us to tell about your encounter! The fact that you were able to get a picture of your aggressor is amazing, I would have been busy doing the 100 yard dash to the nearest anything...

All these years I was under the impression that you would only have problems with these big steers if you went looking for trouble and would be fine if you left them alone! Guess I was wrong...

  17. Dear Parker,

Just came from TexWisGirl and read your scare! I've worked with an ex bull fighter, he grabbed the bulls also by their horns but he got wounded several times. They are too big for human beings. Glad you escaped with only your nasty scar. No head wounds and nothing serious.
    Best regards to you,
    Mariette

  22. Here from TexWis Theresa's, and WOW, you are one lucky dude, Parker. I'm so grateful you survived what could have been, well, I'm sure you are well aware of the 'could have beens.' Animals sure do react instinctively. Happy healing and do whistle, or sing, or anything to let him know you're coming....never look him square in the eye. It's the same with the black bear we have, staring straight in their eyes is a sign of intimidation and the fight is on. Stay safe and keep taking photos.

  25. Mercy! You're one lucky bugger for sure ~ I know several people who have had run in's with bulls and suffered some pretty serious injuries. So glad it wasn't worse than it was. Great photo though :) Heal quickly and stay safe!

  26. This is quite a story and a very memorable event, for sure! Like many others, I am happy that you were not injured more seriously. I am impressed with your calmness in giving yourself first aid to avoid infection. Clear thinking on your part. After seeing the photo, which you took under dire circumstances as only a true photographer would do, I'd like to both advise and encourage you to dismiss thinking about a gift for Big Red. He's not one to fool with...and that's no bull!

sure glad you're ok...things could have been worse!!

    (came here via TexWis too!)

  30. OMG, what a close call! WHEW! Thank goodness you survived the ordeal OK. I've walked through grizzly bear forests, just to get photos, so I understand the crazy things photographers do to get a shot! And that photo is a doozy, made extra special because of the story!

  34. Stopping by from Tex's blog. WOW! What a story. I'm glad there was a happy ending. It was happy wasn't it? I'm not sure because I keep thinking about the pain and then I hoped the ER Doc provided some good pain pills. And you're going back??? Not me! I would admire Red from afar next time. Glad you survivied.

My brother in-law had got pinned upagainst the barn wall.

From his huge bull like this you had.

He was lucky he made it also.

Your story here makes me twitch in my tummmy. Glad your okay that he never killed you. They are having their own persoanlities and minds and you never take for granted whom they are. I am a believer of that.

Praying you mend soon and you have got Tender Loving Care for you.
