Taking flight X 2

As long as we aren't looking too closely at photos...

I took this one on the fly, no pun intended, at the ranch the other day. I was walking around with the Sigma 150-500mm on the D700 and came across these birds in one of the ponds. I was trying to get a little closer to catch them standing in the water but they saw me first and took flight. I aimed and had time for one frame before they were blocked by the trees. It's just a little out of focus.

  1. I like this alot!
These ponds are great for wildlife and the big barrel Sigma will get a workout around them! You might as well make a trip to the bookstore and pick up a book so you can start identifying the many birds that will visit. Different species at different times of year will be interesting!
Wonder what a guy could see visiting the pond at sunup besides a sunrise??LOL

    1. Sun-up? Reading a book? That sounds a lot like work. I just like takin' the perty pictures! LOL

Yes, I will have to invest in a bird book and probably even a Hawaiian plant book. I do have a pop up hunting blind I'm going to use around the ponds once we get settled just to see what I can get photos of. I will even be able to set up my tripod inside with a chair and an ice chest or thermos and a heater if it gets cold!

    2. I fear for the Spirit of Adventure, and the hardships the early explorers endured to find it! But I think you might be onto something!LOL

    3. I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but as I get older I do like my comforts so I figure out a way to get them!

Besides, I have to wait for you to go with me when I do the exploring, I don't want you getting soft on me! LOL

  2. Great capture of Casmerodius albus x2! Looks like you have a pair of Great Egrets in one of your ponds.
I suspect you are going to be coming up with some amazing pictures over the coming months and years of some of the wildlife and scenery from around your new home!

  3. Smarty pants! LOL

There were actually five of these birds out there when I took this photo. Once I stirred them out of the water all they wanted to do was sit in the trees and taunt me.

Hopefully you are right and I will have lots of opportunities for photos here. Maybe even more if I get up at sun-up. :~)

    1. Taking pictures at sun-up? Wouldn't that be completely out of character for you? "Sun-up is what happens if you stay up too late"! LOL

  4. Chasing these birds you would need a Wimberley or Jobu tripod head. This is a great pond for migrations, I would invest in a camouflage tent, and stock some fish in this pond. Man! I can see you sitting quietly snapping away.

    1. Q, all three ponds are already stocked, catfish, bass, perch and I have the camo tent already too! I've been looking at the Wimberley and Jobu gimble style heads for a while now. Thought about getting one for next whale season on Maui so I guess it would work in Kansas.

  5. Egrets are a favorite of mine, so pleasant to observe. We have quite a collection of waders here along the coastal marshes and creeks :^)
