Tulips at 36.3 megapixels

It finally got warm enough for a few more flowers to start popping up so I took the opportunity to get out with the new Nikon D800 (it arrived Monday) and take a few photos. Of course it's suppose to freeze tonight and snow tomorrow so I may have to wait another week for any more flowers to show up!

This first shot is straight out of the camera with no touch ups except for resizing it for the blog. I shot it using the D800 with a Nikon 105mm micro lens and a ring flash.

This second shot is straight from the camera except for cropping about 75% and resizing.  It was shot with the same lens but no ring flash this time. As shot, the tulip photos were making files at 38.9 mb each.

Both shots are hand held with the wind whipping the flowers around while I was trying to shoot.

  2. About time! I've been on the edge of my seat since last Friday waiting to see results from your new D800...

Wow impressive results! Definitely worth the wait. Good detail especially in the second photo. Best thing about 36.3 megapixels is you can do some serious cropping and still have a very detailed photo to work with.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

    1. Adorama had promised to have the camera to me by last Friday but they failed to ship it second day air and then told me I could either wait until Monday or they could cancel my order.

I went ahead and let them deliver and then sent a couple of very nasty e-mails to management about it. The battery grip (which I ordered from somebody else) showed up yesterday so now all I need is about $1000 in memory cards and I can take some photos! LOL

Once the weather changes I will be out trying to get some sunsets to see how it performs there.

    2. I think you are going to be mighty impressed when you see the results the Expeed 3 produces over the Expeed 2 which is in your D300 and my D90. Also my jumping from 12mp to 24mp was great and you are going from 12mp to 36mp!

Only shortcoming I've found so far is that the larger files are a little slower to handle in Photoshop and in the picture viewing program that comes with my computer.

Don't forget to update the info in this blogsite about the cameras we are both using now.

    3. The files definitely load slower going into photoshop and even transfering them to the computer. I will have to get use to that and only shooting 4 frames per second. I will be carrying the D700 and D800 on my outings just in case I need to shoot fast I can switch to the D700 and get the 8 frames per second.

I didn't even think about updating the "shooters" section. Thanks! I will get that done now.

  4. I'm glad that you did put a good use on that lens. It takes a good practice to get use to that lens. Did you use that ring flash from Nikon?

    1. I wasn't sure how much I would use a ring flash so I bought one of the off brand lights from China just to play with and see if I would really use it that much. Ithink it's going to be useful but it's not something I will carry around all of the time.
