Steller's Jay

Found this fellow and a few of his blue feathered friends making quite a fuss about all the recent Robin interlopers who've suddenly reappeared now that the days are getting longer and the weather getting warmer.

Normally pictures of these Jays come out quite dark, but the lighting was low and bright this morning and the bird's feathers reflected it quite nicely.

  1. Beauty of a shot! So nice when an interesting subject and the light of morning come together to produce an image as this. Stellar indeed!

  2. That came out really nice. The lighting was perfect for the shot. Were you using hte 18-300mm or the Sigma 120-400mm lens?

    1. This shot is about 20% of the original picture and was taken with my Sigma 18-400 handheld. I'm looking forward to working with 24 mp images in the near future then I can crop even more when necessary and still have a presentable picture.

    2. Oops... Sigma 120-400. Sigma 18-400 I wish!

    3. Nikon makes an 80-400mm lens. Maybe that would go well with the new D7100. :~)

    4. When I bought the Sigma 120-400 it was a toss up between that and the Nikon 80-400. After much research and a test drive of both lenses I bought the Sigma. Image quality was the same and better price by $400 at the time and the Sigma has an internal focus motor rather than the older and slower screw jack focusing which uses the cameras focus motor.

  4. Great shot. Some much easier to take a birds photo when they are sitting still and you have time to set the camera.
