Earthquake!

I had my first experience with an earthquake last night.

I wasn't taking any photos at the time so I don't have any blurry pictures for you to see but I have never been through an earthquake before so this was interesting. Even though the epicenter of the quake was in Oklahoma it was felt as far north as Kansas City and our whole house rattled for about ten seconds.

  1. We felt it here in Yukon,Ok. Windows and doors rattled, chandeliers swayed, and the dishes in the cabinets shook. You could actually here noise coming from the house as it creaked and groaned from the ground moving. It lasted for several seconds before subsiding. I had time to run out on the porch and you could hear the rumbling sound from other houses in the neighborhood. The only damage I could find om my house this morning was a 3foot in length crack by 1/8 inch wide in the mortar between the bricks. This was the second one we had yesterday, the first being around 2:15 AM while this one happened around 10:53PM in the evening. I'm just glad we weren't in the epi-center of this 5.6 quake.

Oh, after figuring out what was going on I did run to get Charlotte and her Dad up to go outside but by then it was over. Of course all the kids began to call as they all live in Yukon to. I just hope thats the last of the after shocks.

  2. According to the news it was the largest earthquake Oklahoma has ever had.

I was suprised to find out the epicenter was in Oklahoma because our house was shaking quite a bit. I thought the quake was in Kansas somewhere. No damage and not even enough shaking to make any damage but it's a very odd feeling to have your house and everything in it shake around you.

  3. Up until yesterday the previous largest was a 5.5 that happened April 9, 1952. The epi-center of that one was at El Reno where I was in the second grade. We were taken outside where I remember seeing a few bricks on the ground that had been shaken out of the building. Us kids thought that was great fun!

  5. Watching the news this evening I see quite a bit of damage to brick buildings in particular and some damage to roads... Likely water and sewer problems will crop up over the next few days.
An earthquake of any sort is totally out of character for your part of the world! Hopefully thats it for another 50 or 60 years...
Just out of curiosity is there any of that "fracking" going on any where near where the earthquake epicenter was?

  6. I don't know Paul but that's a good question. Oklahoma is a big oil place so it's possible.

Parker may know more than I do about it.

  7. Paul, fracking wouldn't really have any bearing on this Quake although fracking is common thru out the state. Oklahoma sits squarely on what the U.S. Geological Survey geophyicist called the North American plate. The building up of pressure in this plate caused the quake. After the main 5.6 shock there has been 12 shocks of 3.0 or higher and more than 70 with magnitudes of 1.0 to 2.5 reported by the Oklahoma Geological Survey as of Sunday. They also said that with the amount of seismic activity over the weekend it would be a surprise if it stopped soon.

  8. WOW! I have live in TX. over 25 years, and I never heard an earthquake in OK. before. Did you see the animal behave differently before the earthquake?

  9. "Q" that is a fine question! Our little white poodle (my wife's of course) was very unsettled all evening which is very unusual for her. She always sets beside me after dinner while we kick back and let our food digest. On this evening she was constantly up and down and wanting outside. Wouldn't go without me going with her. After the shaker she stood on my chest looking me in the face as if to say you need to be paying attention when I'm trying to tell you something! Never under estimate your pets foresight!!!!!

Just to add a little drama...... Tornadoes have been occuring this afternoon. Seen some fantastic live feed views from Gary England on CH 9 of some twisters hitting the tops of Mtns. in the north western Wichitas. No where close to Camp Doris. Stick around, nothing boring about Oklahoma! We can spin on a dime and give you nine cents change!!LOL

  10. Our dogs were just like me, laying on the couch with no idea what was coming or happening at the time. They didn't even wake up from their naps and Cheryl had to point out to me that the cabinets were shaking.LOL

Tornados in the mountains? I need to be there with my camera!
