Can you hear the fog horn?

As we were FINALLY leaving the airport after arriving five hours late and without our luggage we came across this new lighthouse on the beach in Gulfport, MS. The sun was going down and the lighting was just perfect to take a photograph. It was a calm spot in a very hectic day.

This was shot handheld with a Nikon D700 mounted with a Nikon 28-300mm VRII lens.

  1. I'll say the lighting was perfect! Nothing like that "golden hour" for photography.

How you liking the Nikon 28-300 VRII lens?

  2. Oh yes....I can hear it, and reminds me on the Lighthouses of NS.

  3. Love this very contemperary-looking lighthouse! I have a coffee-table book of lighthouses that I occasionally haul out and peruse. Such pleasurable buildings!

  4. Paul,

The lens is great so far. I just have to get used to the wieght and size of everthing. The D700 is just slightly larger than the D300 and a few ounces heavier. The 28-300mm lens is massive compared to the Tamron 18-250 I have on the D300. The Nikonn lens is twice the size and weight of the Tamron but it has an extra 50mm, the VRII and it's full frame so I guess it's a good trade off. I do need to get a good neck strap though.

  5. Looking closely at the top windows you can see the prisms for reflecting the light. Would like to see this lit at night!
    28mm-300mm, covers alot of ground!

  6. So the 28-300 lens with a full frame sensor camera would give you the same focal lenght as an 18-200 on a DX or 3/4 sized sensor camera.
What advantages are you seeing with the D700 over the D300 so far?

  7. I can hear the fog horn, but can you see the D700 recorded colors, and the WB vs. your D300? Also, do you see the different on your picture quality between Sigma, and Nikkor lens?

Congrad. on your new 28-300mm, this lens is a great lens for travel, and I think you just made an awesome investment on this one.

  8. Paul,

It's still early on with the D700 but I can tell you I have noticed there seems to be more detail in the photos I've been taking and it seems a lot less light is needed to get a really good shot. And like Q said, the colors seem to be richer with the D700 than the D300.

The focal length on the 28-300mm will be different from the 18-200mm by 100mm. The small frame gives a cropping factor instead of more zoom to the lens so I can actually reach out further with this lens than the 18-200mm. So far it seems to be working really well. The D700 has a setting in the camera to control any vignetting which seems to work really well also.

I'm only about half way through the book on the D700 so I still have a lot of learning to do. It has several more features on it that the D300 does.

I'll have a few more photos to put up when I get back. We're sitting in the airport now waiting for our plane home. Hopefully the trip back will go smoother than the trip here.
