Maui Steaks

I think he heard me! LOL

These were taken during our drive to Hana. Instead of driving to Hana and then turning around and going back the way we came we chose to drive completely around the island.

Up until just a few years back the rental car companies would void your rental contract and make you completely responsible for any damage to the rental car if you took this drive. There was a section of road that was all dirt and not maintained and you had to have a four wheel drive to make it through that piece of road. Mainly because they set up high enough that you could get through the pot holes without tearing up the bottom of the car.

These days there are still two sections of that road, about a mile each, that are dirt and gravel. I wouldn't recommend traveling it when it was wet but if it's not, then it was a pretty good drive. The dirt and gravel sections were actually smoother than some of the paved sections were.

These two shots were taken on the Kaupo Ranch near Nuu bay along the Pi'ilani Highway. (That's pee-ee-lah-nee Highway) You can tell that we had made the turn and were back on the leeward side of the island as everything was starting to get back to being brown instead of green.

  1. Wow had no idea you could drive clear around, what an excellent adventure this would be!

Interesting how all the Hawaiian islands have their lush rainforest side and then their dry leeward side... Night and day!

  2. You do know you can drive all the way around Oahu too, don't you? I did that about 30 years ago.

  3. Definitely need a 4X4 to drive around Keana Point and the rental companies would have a bird if they knew! We have seen the "road" (goat trail) from both sides, I wouldn't even try it with my own 3/4 ton GMC, it's bad!

  4. ...my hubby was working in Hana last spring and I was able to join him for a few weeks. Gotta admit I left a little part of me on the Hana Highway, not just once but twice and I was DRIVING!!!It was at night and in the rain and I am prone to motion sickness, and that drive is not for those that suffer from that, at least not without taking DRUGS!!! :) We did do the complete loop several times and the I would do the backside route any day before going back on the winding Hana Hwy.Beautiful vistas!!

  8. I would love to explore that park of the island. But, I was driving the Cadillac CTS at that time. However, I was thinking rent a motorcycle for the road to Hana again. Also, did you know they have Cowboys on the island too you know!
