The morning of May 8th found myself on the road traveling south with my fifth wheel trailer in tow. Destination was the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge ninety-two miles from my driveway but a world apart from my surroundings!
In less than two hours time I had traded a surburban, flat, primarily wheat growing land for a mountainous, tree and grass covered area that makes up a large portion of what is called 'The Great Plains' in our State of Oklahoma.
Set up my camp in Doris Campground where Ron once was manager and lived. I miss Cheryl and him in the campground and the hospitality they exuded! The campground is still in good hands and the Moody's are making friendly hosts.
Last year drought and wildfires plagued this wonderful land. This year wildflowers and green, lush, rich in nutrients, native praire grasses cover the great plains! Excellent fodder for the Buffalo, Elk, and Texas Longhorn which call this refuge home.
June 1st found me reluctantly on my two hour journey home. My stay was filled with many hikes, photo opportunitys, meeting new people, some good-some bad, visiting with and hiking with old friends, being productive and lazy, and most important, Loving Life!!
Started the trip with Sunsets and twenty-four Sunrises later, a few days short of a month, was back in another enviroment called Home. They each have their own advantages!
Pics for this trip will include alot of wildflowers, some praire dogs, lizards, Buffalos, scenery from hikes, Mississippi Kites, and a few more just for fun! Stay Tuned!
